Families trapped, left homeless as Yarra Ranges smashed by Melbourne storm.
FLASH flooding caused chaos across the Yarra Ranges with the area hit with 15mm in about 10 minutes. The worst hit suburbs included Lilydale, Tecoma, Upwey, Belgrave and Chirnside Park.
The Emerald SES unit answered 40 calls for assistance. Issues included a collapsed retaining wall that trapped a family in Belgrave, water damage to a pizza shop in Tecoma, forcing the business to close for the night, and even a group of stranded alpacas in Upwey.
Many calls related to water damage, with the downpour compromising gutters. The Lilydale SES unit responded to about 29 call-outs, most relating to water damage in Chirnside Park, from about 4.30pm.
Emerald SES member Dale Frankland said while the event didn’t result in any injuries there were a few incidents of property damage. “The majority of our call-outs were related to water damage to properties, although we did have a couple of trees blocking driveways,” he said.
